History of Jabneh Christian Academy
The words selected to formulate the name of the institution were careful and prayer chosen. The Hebrew word Jabneh means that which God Build.
Christian refers to professing belief in Jesus as Christ, following the life and teachings of Jesus and manifesting the qualities or spirit of Jesus, especially in showing concern for others. What is an academy? An academy is an institution of higher learning, or honorary membership. Though J.C.A. enrolls icons from 3 years old, it is an academy in every sense of the word. The deposit that the Lord placed in the heart of the founder is to offer education up to the tertiary level and to include course that are non-traditional but will effectively affect the culture, moral and spiritual climate of the land. Hence, Jabneh Christian Academy, through pray, obedience to the Word of God and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
Rev. Dr. Natasha R. Francis-Campbell, with specific instruction from the Lord started Jabneh Christian Academy September 4, 2006 with seven students at 2 Pleasant Park, Georges Plain, Westmoreland, Jamaica.
Jabneh provides a schooling alternative. It is not an alternative school. However, students in need of an alternative school can be accommodated after carefully analysis of each unique situation. Alternative schools are specifically intended for students with special educational needs, as well as addressing social problems that affect students, such as teenage parenthood and students who are typically referred to as at-risk students, and may have one or more reasons such as challenging behaviour, a need for special remedial programs, emotional disabilities, or problems that destabilize the student’s personal life, such as homelessness or gross instability in the home.
J.C.A. as an schooling alternative is not only intended to accommodate students who are considered at risk of failing academically, but also students of all academic levels and abilities who are better served by a non-traditional program.
J.C.A believes that every child has the nature of God embedded within and with special care, diligence, strategic planning, much prayer and an individualized approach to learning; each child can realize his/ her mission and potential in a holistic manner.
J.C.A. promotes family. It is with this in mind that the physical structure of the institution will always look like a home.

Every child that enters Jabneh Christian Academy is enrolled into a finishing mentality with five character building pillars/ soft skills as its core objective, these are:

Policies
- Admission
For admission to Jabneh Christian Academy, parents must satisfy the registration requirements listed below in addition to accurately completing and returning documents in the registration package.

J.C.A. believes that homework is a vital element in the learning experience as it seeks to:
- Reinforce concepts
- Function as an effective tool to determine if students got a good grasp of the concept that was taught.
- Encourage learner responsibility to the education process.
- Create a link between home and school
- Develop discipline in students
- Give family members an opportunity to be involved in student’s academic pursuit.
- serves as a means for clarifying and reviewing material learned in class, for providing motivation and opportunity for individual growth,
- and for creating experiences of in-depth study and supplementary reading.
You are therefore being asked to check and affix your signature to your child’s/children’s homework, so it can be marked by the class teacher/practitioner. Homework without the signature of a parent or guardian will not be checked by the facilitator.

- Grading
Journals will be checked, however, grammatical errors, spelling or sentence structure will be ignored. Journal writing is designed to allow students to express themselves without reservation.
- Stars will be awarded for perfect work, that is, 100%. Relevant stickers and or written comments will be used to highlight efforts whether desirable or undesirable, that will require special attention.
- All errors in students’ books must be corrected. Corrected work will be marked with another colour ink.
- Snack
At Jabneh Christian Academy, your child’s health is of great concern to us. With this, we insist that your child’s snack/break be a serving of fruits or vegetables and water. Under no circumstance will anything else be allowed.
SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS
Where a child has a special dietary need/requirement, the operator will ask the parents to supply a sample menu or provide meals for the duration of the icon’s stay at the institution.
- Payment
You are being encouraged to make payment before the first school day in each term. (Failure to meet this obligation can lead to the withdrawal of your child’s/children’s privilege of being a member of this noble institution.)
- All late school fees attract a charge of 10 % of the late sum.
- Hot lunch will be served daily. The payment for lunch can be made at the beginning of the week or daily. Lunches must be paid for. If you are crediting meals for your child/ward, this must be indicated in writing and the time of payment stated. Resist the temptation to burden the child by sending a verbal message to the teacher or administrator.
- Attire
Students should be attired in blue jeans pants and the white, blue or red polo t-shirt provided by the institution unless otherwise noted. Students who are not attired according to the stipulation of J.C.A. will be subject to disciplinary action. While the foot wear is flexible, flip-flops are prohibited. Students are expected to wear clothes free from wrinkles, dirt and unpleasant odours and clean shoes daily. For physical education, the designation outfit is to be worn all day.
- Learning Resources
J.C.A. offers personalized education and as such your child must be equipped with all the tools the institution deems necessary for the process. The books are absolutely important, since we do not encourage the practice of copying tasks from the board as it is our view that this is a rather time consuming method. It is necessary for parents to check with students to ensure that the books needed for each day are packed and taken to school.
Payment for A Beka books becomes due in June of every academic year. Payment is made in US $.
- Pickup
Please endeavour to pick up your child/ward within 30 minutes of dismissal daily. Consistent late pick-ups will attract a fee to be determined by the caregiver who had the icon in his/her care. We would prefer you picking up you icon within the time specified. This affords our practitioners amply time to prepare lessons and learning aids for the following day.
| Please furnish your taxi drivers with the following information:
-The correct name of your icon.
-The name of your icon’s group and teacher.
-Icons will not be released before dismissal time without notification from parents/ guardians.
-Horns should not be used on the school campus to call students. Drivers should collect icons from classroom.
-Music being played in vehicle should not be audible to anyone on the school’s campus.
– Use the specified walkway and parking areas not the lawn.

- Illness at school
Students who appear to become ill during the school day will be assessed and a decision will be made by administration whether or not the child should be sent home. If deemed necessary to send the child home, parents will be telephoned at home or work to make arrangements for pick-up. NB. In case of emergency, medical attention for the student will be first priority.
If your icon appears sick upon leaving home, please keep your icon at home. Sick icons will not be admitted to class
MEDICAL PROCEDURES
Medication will be administered in this institution under the following conditions:
- Prescribed for acute or chronic conditions by a medical Practitioner
- Non-prescription for emergency use upon parental written request
The following parameters will guide the administration of medication.
Parental Medical Authorisation as outlined in the form below will be required for the administration of all drugs to children whether prescription or non-prescription. This will be required for each period of illness or every six months for chronic illness.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONSE
Consent Form
A parental Consent Form for Medical Emergency will be completed for each child to the first day of school admission. Upon acceptance of any child for care, the operator will ensure that written consent allowing for emergency medical treatment is obtained. This will be part of each icon’s admission record.
The form:
- Will include emergency contact information for parents/guardians as well as other individuals designated by them.
- Will include details of the contact information for the child’s regular health care provider.
- Provide details of any health condition affecting the child and the necessary emergency measures to be instituted.
- Give consent for the operator to seek medical attention in the case of emergency in the event that the parent/designate cannot be reached or contacted.
- Specifies the acceptance of the administrative arrangement for payment of medical expenses incurred.
- Will be subject to annual update or sooner if child is absent /remove from the care for a period greater than a month.

- Personal Appearance
A good personal hygiene routine should be followed daily: ears, neck, and fingernails should be given special attention. When appropriate, children should be instructed in the use of deodorant. Apply a good body lotion to moisturized students’ skin especially during cold times.
Uniforms should always be neat and clean. A belt is to be worn by students whose pants waist is larger than their actual size to ensure that the pants remain at the waist and not the hip or below.
Kindergarten students often find it difficult to practice their independence when they need to use the restroom because they find it challenging to maneuver the belts. Pants with self –adjusted waist or elastic waist is friendlier to them.
Hair should be clean and well groomed. Bangs should not be so long that they impede vision.
Parents will be notified if a child comes to school consistently in an unkempt manner. If no improvement is noticed within a reasonable amount of time, an appointment with the parents will be made by school officials.
- Lateness
Lateness interrupts the learning process for your icon and all the other icons in that classroom. Any icon arriving at school after the published opening time is considered late. Please understand that homework turned in after 8:30 am will not be checked by the teacher.
Parents will be consulted about chronic lateness, and the child may be required to make up time missed at an additional cost.
- Attendance
Legal Absence: A child is legally absent from school for the following reasons: sickness, sickness or death in the family, impassable roads or extreme weather. All other absences are illegal. When a child is absent, parents are required to phone the school by 9:00 A.M. When the child returns to school, an absence note must be given to the teacher. The note should have the child’s name, date of absence, class, reason for absence, and the signature of a parent or guardian. Absence notes are always required in addition to the phone call.
- Appointments
Doctor or dental appointments should be scheduled for after school or on Saturdays. If it is necessary for a child to be dismissed during the school day, the school must be informed in writing ahead of time, and the parent/guardian must sign out the child.
- Birthday Parties
Birthday parties may be held in each homeroom with the Administration’s permission. All birthday parties will commence at I o’ clock. Parents must be on time or the party may not be able to take place. It is important for parents to check with the administration if the party will be thematic and include cartoon characters as there are a number of cartoon characters the institution deems inappropriate for its icons.

In addition to class assessment, which is done weekly, your child will also take part in all the national examinations.

Please note that J.C.A. does not engage in end of term examination. An average of students’ performance for each term will be the grade entered on the report cards.
- Fire Drills
Fire drills at regular intervals are important safety precautions. It is essential that when the fire signal is given, everyone obeys promptly and clears the building by the prescribed route as quickly as possible. Students are not permitted to talk during a fire drill and are to remain outside the building until a signal is given to return inside. Teachers will direct the student.
- Field Trips
Field trips must serve an educational purpose and their value should be an integral part of the school’s instructional program. They broaden the students’ educational experiences. Field trips are privileges given to students; no student has an absolute right to a field trip.
• Field trips are designed to correlate with teaching units and to achieve curricular goals.
• Field trips vary on each grade level.
• Field trips are permissible when advanced planning, location, and the experience insure a successful learning opportunity.
• Individual teachers in consultation with the administration reserve the right to restrict or deny student participation on any field trip due to, but not limited to, poor academic performance and/or poor conduct.
• A written official permission slip, signed by the parent, is required before a child will be permitted to attend a field trip. Verbal permission cannot be accepted. Permission slips are due in the office 48 hours before the day of the trip.
- Language
- Each student at J.C.A. is expected to make a concerted effort to speak standard Jamaican English (SJE) at all times. Parents are being asked to assist in this process by:
- Encouraging and praising students for efforts made.
- Responding in SJE when in dialogue with the students.
- Increasing the number of phrases and sentences spoken is SJE in the home.
It has becomes evident to me during my teaching career of almost 20 years, that students are hesitant to transfer or use learnt information including the use of SJE at home because of the ridicule they experience.
- Colloquial expressions are strictly prohibited.
- Students should be addresses by the names on their birth certificates. Aliases, yard names and affectionate tones should be reserved for occasions outside the context of J.C.A.
- Name calling will not be tolerated. Students who engage in this could be suspended for up to 3 days.
- Change of Contact information
Inform the office immediately if there is a change of home address, or telephone number.
- Phone calls
Phone calls to the school are strongly discouraged during instructional periods, except for cases of emergency. If you must call the school, do so during break, lunch or after school.
- Cellular Phones
Icons’ cell phones must be turned off upon entering the campus and remain off and stored in bags ( not clothing pockets) during the school day until the teacher has dismissed the icons’ at the end of the day.
Icons should not make calls, play games, send text or Whatsapp messages, use Facebook, play music, view or take pictures and connect to the internet while on the school’s compound. Any violation will result in the instrument being confiscated for a period of two weeks.
Toys and electrical Devices
Icons may not bring toys, toy type items, electronic gadgets such as tablets, game Boys, etc. to school except for schedule lessons.
Discipline
Discipline is an important component of any successful educational process. It goes without saying that if there is not ongoing, predictable discipline within a classroom, educational goals will not be met.
School Rules
The spirit of these school rules is clear. A serious breach or persistent flouting of them will lead to severing of academic relation with J.C.A.
Pupils are expected to exhibit a high standard of personal behaviour and to work to the best of their abilities at all times. Any pupil who does not do so may, after warnings and relevant communication with parents, be required to leave the School at any time or may not be promoted to the next grade level.

Parents as Partners in Education
As parents expect the school to provide the facilities and the trained personnel that are essential to their child’s proper development, so the school expects the parents to take an active role in the child’s education.
No school can be wholly effective in teaching the values of religion and the virtues of honesty, respect for authority, consideration for the rights and property of others, and standards of personal morality and integrity unless these principles are established, upheld, and valued in the home. If parents cooperate with the school, instill respect for the integrity of its teachers and administration, and actively support the school’s authority in the home, then, the children will likely reflect the same positive attitudes.
Parents are asked to take an active role in their child’s education by:
• assisting their child in his/her academic and moral development by carefully reviewing class work, test results, progress reports, and report cards; supervising home study; and reinforcing school policies.
• explaining and reviewing periodically the school’s behaviour code with their children. Parents should discuss school disciplinary episodes in relation to the school behaviour code.
• recognizing their child’s talents and interests so they may be developed in cooperation with the classroom teachers.
• enforcing the dress code, including the P.E. gear
- insisting on their child’s regular school attendance and punctuality and on complying with attendance rules and procedures.
• making all tuition and fee payments on time, and participating in fund-raising activities.
• providing proper supervision at home, and not tolerating harassment, inappropriate or violent behaviour, or viewing of such in videos, movies, song lyrics, and on the Internet or in books/magazines .
• teaching their child respect for law, for authority, for the rights of others, and for public and private property. This includes showing respect for the work of others by not tolerating cheating in any circumstance.
• arranging for a time and place for their child to complete homework assignments.
• working with the school in a cooperative effort to carry out recommendations made in the best interest of their child, including those related to educational evaluations and counseling.
• attending all Parent-Teacher Conferences and special meetings.
• by always interacting in a respectful manner when speaking with or about the administration, teachers and staff of the school. Verbal or physical harassment may result in your child being asked to withdraw from the school immediately or not being allowed to re-register for the following term.
The education of a student is a partnership between the parents and the school. The parent has the right to withdraw a child if desired, the school administration reserves the right to require the withdrawal of a student if the administration determines that the partnership is irretrievably broken.

Parents’ Contract
Jabneh Christian Academy is a partnership between parents, students, teachers, and staff to provide the best possible alternative schooling experience for our students. In order to achieve our ambitious goals, we must all make a commitment to working together.

We promise to encourage and support our child as he or she works to achieve his or her goals by providing all needed tools and a home environment conducive to maximising our child’s learning opportunities.
We understand the Academy’s REACH values, and we will make sure that our child learns to live up to them. We also understand that there will be disciplinary consequences if our child violates the REACH values, even in little ways, and we will support the school in its efforts to enforce high standards for behaviour and citizenship.
We understand that every school day is important, and we will make sure that our child arrives at school every day on time. If our child takes the bus, we will ensure that he or she is at the bus stop on time. We understand that, our child is expected to attend summer classes the summer prior to the GSAT he/ she will sit.
We will not schedule family vacations so that our child will miss school. We will send our child to school every day in the Jabneh Christian Academy uniform. We understand that Jabneh’s academic standards are very high. Grades and promotion are earned, and my child may need additional classes to master challenging areas.
We will communicate regularly with our child’s teachers. We will return a phone call from a member of the Academy’s staff within 24 hours. If we are asked to attend a meeting at the school regarding our child’s education or behaviour, we will make every effort to be there. If we have a concern or questions, we will communicate in a respectful tone with Jabneh’s teachers and staff. We will provide a quiet place where our child will complete his/her homework. We will check to see that our child completes his/her homework every night and affix our signatures as is required by the institution. We will not sign the reading log unless we see our child read.
We will honour our financial commitment on time and do understand that after three (3) weeks of classes we are not entitled to a refund. If we withdraw our child from the institution before three weeks we are entitled to a 50% refund.

Student’s Contract
Jabneh Christian Academy is a partnership between parents, students, teachers, and staff to provide the best possible education for our students. In order to achieve our ambitious goals, we must all make a commitment to working together.
Pledge by the student:
I promise to very work hard, probably harder than I ever have before, to achieve my personal best. I understand that my education is important, and I will try to make the most of every opportunity I have to learn. I will never settle for less than I have the potential to accomplish. I will do my best to attend school every day. I will arrive on time and in uniform. I understand the Jabneh Christian Academy REACH values, and I will try to live up to them every day.
R: I will Respect my classmates, teachers, my school property, and myself. My teachers hold the keys to my future; I will always treat them with special respect. I will jump to it when they ask me to do something. I also know that my classmates are my teammates; I will never put them down or let them down.
E: I will approach learning with Enthusiasm. I will do things with a positive attitude.
A: I will aim for Achievement in every subject by producing top quality work- clean, neat, accurate work. I will complete my homework every night, including my required reading.
C: I will demonstrate good Citizenship. I will look for opportunities to help my classmates, my school, and my city.
H: I will always practice Hard Work when I approach a task. I will come to class prepared, focused, and ready to learn. I will give every task my very best. I understand that Jabneh’s standards for academics and behaviour are very high and that there will be consequences if I do not live up to the REACH values. If I fail to honour any one of the values, I will take responsibility for my actions, try to learn from my mistakes and will work to improve my behaviour.
