Parents Experience Trauma Too!

A trauma is a deeply disturbing or distressing experience. In these last days, traumatic events are way too frequent and commonplace.

This reality makes it difficult for the traumatized to be assisted in meaningful ways.

What I want to highlight is the fact that the traumatized persons are everywhere . They may be found in our schools, workplaces, churches, in our neighborhoods, but most frightening is the idea that they may be in our homes. It could be you, your children, your spouse or that person who is working for you.

Trauma affects us in so many ways. My mission is to bring into focus the thought that trauma affects parenting.

November is celebrated as Parent Month here in Jamaica. What a blessing!

Here is a limited list of challenges that may cause trauma and influence Parenting negatively.

Loss of children

Loss of spouse

Loss of a significant other

Prolonged illness

Compromised parenting rights

Parental strife

Child support

Alimony

Divorce

Family secrets including but not limited to: incest, rape, violations of law, involvement in witchcraft and the occult and children’s paternity.

Some social problems include – school problems , learning disabilities, giftedness, alcohol and drug abuse, criminal behaviors, loneliness, loss of confidence, mental disorders, residential instability, violence in the home and parenting styles.

I’d like to propose that there are things we all can do to help the traumatized. At least we could increase our vigilance as we intermingle with individuals daily or whatever the frequency. We could also call or message someone we haven’t seen in a while. Have you ever wondered what could cause someone to withdraw from friends and familiar places?

Traumatized persons could benefit from:

Prayer

Family counseling

Joining a fellowship of believers

Engagement in deep Bible study exploring the nature of God and His love for the hurting.

Self- help skills

Marital guidance

Social support

Financial support

Alternative lifestyle changes

Law enforcement

Change of environment

Healthcare

Utilizing the “fully integrated “ method of living where the compartments are torn down giving Jesus access to all the areas of our lives.

You can do something today to assist the traumatized in your circle and help our nation. Please do. Thanks

It’s Here! It’s Here!

It is with glee and much jubilation that I write unto you this day, November 1. You are so special and necessary in this era and a most important nation builder.

This is your month! Yes, the next 29 day are dedicated to you. As a parent, I know that we are accustomed to seeing everyone and everything through first and then, time, energy and even resources run out on us. Yet, I’m imploring you to indulge. The sky will not fall out of place.

The home can be one of the most rewarding, yet most challenging place to reproduce of your kind. You have done well in so many areas and I will highlight just a few.

You have done well in:

1. building a solid foundation of character that has been maturing with time,

2. teaching your child/children to trust in the Lord,

3. modeling a prayerful life before them,

4. opening the lines of communication before corrosion sets in,

5. introducing them to healthy food choices,

6. showing them how to overcome life’s challenges using the Word of God,

7. a great servant-leader,

8. modeling healthy financial habits, and how to make money work for them rather than working for money.

9. successfully encouraging excellence in all things.

10. praying without ceasing for your children.

Congratulations!

Have fun this month.

The blessings of the Lord are on you.

Our Annual Pajama Day

In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O LORD, make me to dwell in safety.

~Psalm 4:8

With so many interesting things to do in just one day everyday, something has to give and many of us give up sleep. This is not unique to adults. Our children have have the same solution.

Parents want children to do well academically and will encourage hours of late night studies. Please see the article below.
